The Laughing Elvis

Whenever I feel down, I like to listen to a song by Elvis Presley. It is the song, ´Are You Lonesome Tonight´, but is a version where he breaks down laughing and can´t stop. He tries to continue the song, but just keeps on laughing. Click here to listen to the song (for those of you with slow connections, the song is 3MB, so you may not want to do so). It lifts me up every time I listen to it.

There are a couple of stories that go along with this. The first is that there is a man with a toupee in the audience. A girl that is trying to get to the stage accidentally knocks off the toupee. On the fly, Elvis changes the lyrics of the song from ´Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there?´ to ´Do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair?´. He does so, as if those were the true lyrics. The background singer continues singing very emphatically without skipping a beat. This make Elvis burst out laughing and he continues doing so throughout the song. There is another story that just mentions a bald man in the audience that is really embarassed when Elvis sings those lyrics

People have said that Elvis must have been high on drugs while singing this song and that´s why he couldn´t control himself. I don´t think so. He sounds lucid and basically in control. It seems like he is just having a really good time and that he loves what he is doing. It also shows that he is a fun-loving guy with a good nature. I think the song really shows his true character.
